unexpected home expense

December 16th, 2018 at 06:40 pm

Because of a big wind storm on Friday a section of our fence fell down and broke. Sigh. Now I have to figure out someone to come out and fix it. I really want this done asap because we are dog sitting a dog and it's hard to let the dogs out of house.

I don't want to make a claim and DH said the neighbor we share the fence with wants to talk to her insurance. Ugh. Of course they apparently have more damage than just the fence so that may be it. But I'd prefer to consider costs. Our deductible is $1000 anyway so it has to be hefty to pay. Of course if I could get DH to do it himself that would be nice. He did the fence at our last place but he isn't interested in doing the work now.

Just another home expense. People who wonder about the 1% maintenance rule? DH and I have found that it is true. We've found that things just come up and maybe some years it's like $0 but then other years big things come up all at the same time.

We too had a big wind event on Friday.
A part of tree top fell in our back yard, as well as branches and pine cones everywhere.

We live in a gated area where there is a manager for the common areas and clubhouse/ pool /park etc. and pay a monthly fee I think the cost of hauling off the debris is the community issue since the tree is a common ground thing but DH cut it all up and we will haul away but yes at any moment something comes up that costs something.
Until you get fence fixed (depending on fence material, we tacked up on wood fence) there is like plastic web material you can cover the opening with so dogs can still be let out etc without worry.

We had such bad winds on Friday that I had a very hard time walking my dog! We went half a block and turned around and came back.

My daughter and son-in-law's fence blew down in their new yard! We have a brand new fence completed this year so it was standing strong! Our chickens spent the day in the coop hunkered down and our Santa in the helicopter was blown around on our lawn. The angel and reindeers stayed in place!
