Odds and Ends

I'm struggling with auto-bill pay. I am so annoyed by it. I put things like the internet, cell phone, garbage, water, electric bill on auto-bill pay. The problem is that the CC it's hooked up to keeps getting changed and I have missed payments because I forgot to update the credit card. The real problem is that these credit cards discover, citibank have been compromised so much that we were trying to update our accounts over the summer every month. It's so frustrating.

Plus I'm pissed at Capitol One now for not paying our CC in full even though I have confirmation numbers of payments. So now we are hit with finance charges and late fees and I'm dealing with paying everything manually and calling the card companies to deal with the fees. I'm just annoyed that it's taking so much time. Plus they refuse to help me when I have confirmation payment codes. Seriously? So I've been dealing with all of BS all morning.

I need to still evaluate our investments and rebalance our accounts. I think we're a little to aggressively invested. Of course it probably doesn't matter too much long term. Staying invested is most important.

But TD Ameritrade lost $60k of our money for 2 weeks. They couldn't find the check we mailed for our Roth IRA conversion. But after we called and complained then they suddenly found it in processing. I am ready to shriek.

The US needs to become more automated. They literally cut checks from checking accounts and mail them. Other countries do immediate electronic debiting when you pay bills. I can't help but wonder how the US is so far behind other countries with processing of banking?

At least the year is over and we have some potential good news. DH might not be the executor of his uncle's estate. There might be a will. So he doesn't have to deal with anything. Cheers. So much better because he won't have to deal with any ramifications from being executor. YES!

That's frustrating about the cards. I encountered that earlier this year when I found out DD2's pet care plan had been cancelled due to missed payments. The vast majority of my bills are not on auto-pay because then it forces me to think about them each month.

I manually pay all credit cards, twice per month when we get paid. We have automatic bills that are charged to our cards, but if a card changes, I just make the change. I'm always aware of that happening. I hope yours gets resolved soon!

We get all fixed bills paid for by direct debit from our account. Here a lot of providers charge fees for paying bills on your CC. I manually pay all variable bills (phone, electricity, gas) in the event that there's a discrepancy. Easier to get a bill reduced if needed than getting your money back after it's been paid.

After the debacle of Savings and Loans institutions a long time ago, legislation to protect people from bankers added a lot of bureaucracy to bureaucratic banking. The 2008 crash added even more determination to bankers to protect themselves from angry consumers. One solution is to keep changing banks or changing to a Credit Union. I notice several SA responders change to take advantage of promotions or percentage rebates listed from Forbeshttp://www.forbes.com/sites/robertberger/2015/02/19/8-cash-back-credit-cards-even-dave-ramsey-should-love/#7f913b205199

Aw I'm so sorry you're dealing with issues regarding your auto bill pay. As far as capitol one goes, can you complain to the BBB? I'm not sure if they handle banking issues but if you have a confirmation number, there should be no issue.
I have my fingers crossed 🤞 that things get better for you

I'm sorry about your frustrations with the auto payments. I have just about all my bills paid by credit card, and then have auto payments setup for e cards. No issues so far.

There are bill paying services out there like CheckFree, which I've been using for 20 years, and my uncle used via a 300 baud modem in the early 1980s. It's been *completely* reliable, using EDI for most bills, but auto-generating and mailing checks to people and small businesses.
